What Inspired you to start Honua Hawaiian Skincare?

Honua Hawaiian Skincare was born out of passion; my passion for skincare and our Hawaiian culture. As an esthetician, I wanted to create a product for my own sun damaged skin that utilized Hawaiian healing botanicals. With the help of my husband, a student of La’au Lapa’au (Hawaiian Healing), we were able to create the first Hawaiian Healing facial line.

Whats your favorite product from the line? Why?

It’s difficult to answer this, as each product has an important role in the skincare ritual. However, if I had to pick just one, it would be the ‘Ōlena Oil. The oil is very special to me, as it is the most traditional of my products. Using the power of the sun, we infuse my three favorite skin-loving oils (kukui, kamani, and chia) with the healing properties of turmeric root (‘ōlena) and noni fruit. The result is healthy glowing skin... hence “get the ‘Olena glow”.

What sets Honua Hawaiian Skincare apart from the sea of competition in the natural beauty industry?

Our use of unique traditional Hawaiian ingredients and methodologies. We not only utilize these native plants, but infuse them with the spirit of ALOHA. We also focus on treating the root cause of skin issues, eliminating the need for multiple lines within our brand. Simple, Authentic & Native!

If you could go back to the beginning of the creation of your brand what would you do differently? 

Nothing. Our journey has taken us through hills and valleys. Have we made mistakes? Of course! However, I believe that our journey has taught us valuable lessons that are important to our growth as a brand and as individuals.

How did you choose the ingredients in your products? 

I chose the best of the best in Hawaiian healing ingredients to treat the skin holistically. Each botanical holds properties beneficial for treating the root of all skin issues. ‘Olena is an anti-inflammatory which treats the root of aging, sun damage, acne and dehydration. Noni is high in Vitamin C and selenium offering all skin types a healthy glow, while our Kukui and Kamani oils help to regenerate the skin while hydrating and plumping the fine lines with omega fatty acids. Lastly we use a blend of natural exfoliating agents such as KO (Hawaiian sugar cane), hibiscus, papaya and willow bark. These key ingredient all play a role in healthy skin.

Where do you see Honua Skincare in the next year?

Next 5 years? Shh... this is top Secret, you are actually first to share this info.... but we will be opening our first brick and mortar location in 1 to 2 years in Northern California. A hub for Hawaiian beauty and wellness. SO excited for this next year. As for 5 years, I would love to see our line increase popularity worldwide.

What was the most rewarding moment since you launched Honua Hawaiian Skincare?

Seeing our Aloha message on the inside of our packaging being shared across the globe... Japan, Germany, France, New Zealand, Australia... I truly believe the Hawaii holds the key to world peace... that key is the ALOHA SPIRIT. Seeing it being shared and practiced gives me goose bumps!

What is your morning and evening skincare ritual?

Pa’akai Cleansing Cream nightly , followed with Hawaiian beauty water 3 times/week (pm only), finished with a self given facial massage, applied with a cocktail of Aloha Youth Serum and ‘Olena Oil. The evening ritual is more relaxing for me and applied with lots of ALOHA and intention. Mornings are busy... I apply my homemade SPF, and mix my Aloha Youth Serum in with my Foundation, then add a drop of ‘olena Oil to my cheeks for an added glow! Once a week I mask with a blend of Pa’akai Cleanser/Beauty Water to keep skin detoxified and exfoliated.

What do you do to relax and unwind?

When my four kids are all in bed, I like to listen to a little Hawaiian music and enjoy a glass of wine.
